The drama starring Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton is scheduled to have its U.S. premiere on October 4.
Pedro Almodóvar’s “The Room Next Door” will be the Centerpiece of the 62nd annual New York Film Festival, Film at Lincoln Center announced Thursday. The drama, which features Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton, will have its U.S. premiere on October 4 at Alice Tully Hall. This film marks Almodóvar’s first English-language feature.
Set in Manhattan and upstate New York, “The Room Next Door” stars Moore as Ingrid, a writer who reconnects with her war journalist friend Martha, played by Swinton. According to Film at Lincoln Center, the film explores their reunion through shared memories, art, and conversations, with Martha’s request posing a challenge to their renewed bond. The film is described as a “hushed and humane portrayal of the beauty of life and the inevitability of death.” Almodóvar wrote the script, adapting it from Sigrid Nunez’s novel What Are You Going Through.
In a statement, Almodóvar expressed his delight at having “The Room Next Door” featured as the Centerpiece of the festival, noting his long-standing connection with the New York Film Festival. He also mentioned the emotional significance of filming at Alice Tully Hall, a location with personal resonance for him.
This will be Almodóvar’s 15th film to be showcased at the festival. Previous films include “Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown” (1988), “All About My Mother,” “Talk to Her,” “Volver,” “Bad Education,” and “Broken Embraces.” He holds the record for the most films presented as gala selections at the festival.
Dennis Lim, Artistic Director of the New York Film Festival, praised Almodóvar’s work, calling “The Room Next Door” a “wise, exquisitely acted, achingly beautiful film” that resonates with the current moment.
Almodóvar’s film joins the previously announced Opening Night selection, RaMell Ross’s “Nickel Boys,” and Steve McQueen’s “Blitz,” which will close the festival.
