Tyler Perry’s ‘Divorce in the Black’ Has Generated More U.S. Prime Video Subscriptions Than Any Other MGM Movie Available on Amazon, According to the Studio

Tyler Perry’s latest film, “Divorce in the Black,” has achieved impressive viewership numbers on Amazon Prime Video. Nielsen reported that the film reached over 498 million minutes watched in its first four days of streaming, and it has driven more new Prime Video subscriptions in the U.S. than any other MGM movie available on the platform, according to Amazon.

The film made its debut on Nielsen’s Top 10 streaming chart, where it ranked as the No. 3 movie for the week of July 8-14, trailing only Netflix’s “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” and Paramount+’s “If.” Given its nearly 2.5-hour length, the 498 million minutes of viewing time translates to an estimated 3.5 million views.

Luminate’s charts also reflect the film’s ongoing popularity. During the week of July 26 to August 1, “Divorce in the Black” accumulated 93.2 million minutes watched, marking its third week on Prime Video. (Note: Variety and Luminate share a common owner in Penske Media Corp.)

The film stars Meagan Good as Ava, a bank professional dealing with a troubled marriage. When her husband Dallas, played by Cory Hardrict, asks for a divorce, Ava is initially devastated but later uncovers Dallas’s actions that have negatively impacted their marriage and her own path to finding true love. Tyler Perry wrote, directed, and produced the film, which is part of his four-picture deal with Amazon Studios. He produced alongside Meagan Good, Angi Bones, Will Areu, and Dianne Ashford.

Amazon did not disclose the number of new subscribers or which previous Amazon MGM film had driven the most subscriber growth. However, the company had previously highlighted the success of “Road House,” which attracted over 50 million global viewers within its first two weeks and is set to have a sequel, as announced by Amazon MGM Studios chief Jennifer Salke at the May upfront presentation.
