Indian superstar Shah Rukh Khan, who recently attended a celebration in Locarno, has teamed up with his sons Aryan Khan and AbRam to provide voices for the Hindi-language version of Disney’s upcoming feature film Mufasa: The Lion King.
Directed by Barry Jenkins, the film explores the backstory of Mufasa, the beloved king of the Pride Lands, and introduces new characters such as an orphaned cub named Mufasa and a sympathetic lion named Taka, who is the heir to a royal bloodline. The film features original songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda and includes an English voice cast with Aaron Pierre as Mufasa, Donald Glover as Simba, and Braelyn Rankins as Young Mufasa.
Mufasa: The Lion King is set to release in Indian theaters on December 20 in English, Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu.
In other news, Nippon TV has finalized a deal with Malaysian content and pay-TV group Astro to adapt two of its award-winning scripted formats for the Malaysian market. Astro will broadcast the Malay-language version of Love’s In Sight! (known as Dari Mata Turun ke Hati in Malaysia) starting August 12, and Homeroom (known as Kelas Tahanan Cikgu Hiragi in Malaysia) will follow.
Love’s In Sight!, based on a popular manga, depicts the life of a girl with low vision attending a school for the blind and her romantic involvement with a disapproved suitor. Homeroom, previously adapted in Turkey and Thailand, revolves around a teacher who takes his 29 students hostage, leading to the revelation of a classmate’s unexplained suicide.
Juita Viden, a major Malaysian distributor of local and international content, facilitated the adaptation deal.
Korean company CJ ENM has licensed its drama format Signal for an Indian adaptation. The Indian version, titled Gyaarah Gyaarah, premiered on August 9 on Zee5. Produced by Sikhya Entertainment and Dharmatic Entertainment, the show explores the concept of time-crossed communication to solve cold cases. It features a modern-day profiler who connects with a police officer from the late 1980s via an old walkie-talkie, unraveling mysteries and battling corruption. The Hindi adaptation, set against the backdrop of the Himalayas, weaves through significant years in Indian history: 1990, 2001, and 2016. It stars Raghav Juyal, Kritika Kamra, and Dhairya Karwa, and is directed by Umesh Bist.
The Pattaya Film Festival will return for its second edition from August 21-25 in Pattaya, Thailand. The competition program will feature six films: Sea Sparkle (Denmark), Gitling (Philippines), The Monk and the Gun (Bhutan), The Great Phuket (China), The Tenants (South Korea), and Last Shadow at First Light (Singapore). The Panorama section will include The Taste of Things, Next Sohee, One for the Road, Not Friends, Ryuichi Sakamoto: Opus, and two classic Thai films: Last Life in the Universe and Somsri 422R. Expected guests include Portuguese director Joao Pedro Rodrigues and Malaysian director Amanda Nell Eu (Tiger Stripes). The festival will also host talks, masterclasses, panels, and a documentary pitching session led by international mentors.
The Asia Society has announced the recipients of its 2024 Asia Game Changer Awards, which honor individuals and groups who have significantly strengthened the bonds between Asia and the world. The awards ceremony will take place on October 24 at Cipriani in New York. This year’s honorees include The Asian American Foundation (TAAF), Bang Si-Hyuk (chairman of Hybe Corp. and music industry visionary), Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin (Academy Award-winning filmmakers for Free Solo and The Rescue), and actor and comedian Bowen Yang.
