John Turturro will be honored with the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo Award at the 30th Sarajevo Film Festival, which takes place from August 16 to 23 in Bosnia. This accolade recognizes his significant contributions to the film industry as an actor, director, and screenwriter.
Jovan Marjanović, director of the Sarajevo Film Festival, remarked: “With a career spanning over four decades, John Turturro has delivered unforgettable performances across a broad spectrum of roles. His dedication, versatility, and ability to infuse depth and authenticity into every character make him a standout presence on screen.”
Turturro studied at SUNY New Paltz and the Yale School of Drama. His career includes collaborations with renowned filmmakers such as Spike Lee in “Do the Right Thing” and “Jungle Fever,” Martin Scorsese in “The Color of Money,” and Robert Redford in “Quiz Show.” He has also worked with Francesco Rosi on “La Tregua,” Robert De Niro in “The Good Shepherd,” Tom DiCillo in “Box of Moonlight,” and Nanni Moretti in “Mia Madre.”
In 2004, Turturro starred in “Secret Passage,” a historical drama by Bosnian director Ademir Kenović.
Turturro is well-known for his work with Joel and Ethan Coen. He won the Best Actor award at the Cannes Film Festival for his role in their film “Barton Fink” and was also honored with the David di Donatello Award. He has appeared in several other Coen Brothers films, including “O Brother, Where Art Thou?,” “Miller’s Crossing,” and “The Big Lebowski,” where he portrayed the memorable character Jesus Quintana. In 2020, Turturro reprised this role in “The Jesus Rolls,” a film he wrote, directed, and starred in.
He received the Camera d’Or Award at Cannes for his directorial debut, “Mac.” His other directorial works include “Illuminata,” “Romance & Cigarettes,” “Passione,” “Fading Gigolo,” and “The Jesus Rolls.”
On television, Turturro earned a SAG Award nomination for his portrayal of Howard Cosell in “Monday Night Mayhem” and another nomination for “The Bronx is Burning.” He won an Emmy Award for his guest role on “Monk” and received nominations for both a Golden Globe and a SAG Award for his performance in HBO’s “The Night Of.” He will also appear in Season 2 of Apple’s series “Severance.”
During the 30th Sarajevo Film Festival, Turturro will lead a masterclass offering insights into his career and craft and will make a special appearance at a screening of “Barton Fink.”
