Disney’s “Deadpool & Wolverine” made a strong debut, earning £17.3 million ($22.2 million) at the U.K. and Ireland box office over the weekend, according to Comscore. The film topped the charts, becoming the highest opener of the year in the region, and significantly outpaced other releases.
Universal’s “Despicable Me 4” held steady in its third week, bringing in £3.1 million to secure the No. 2 spot, with a total of £25.3 million. Warner Bros.’ “Twisters” remained at No. 3, adding £1.5 million in its second week for a cumulative £7.9 million.
Disney’s “Inside Out 2,” which was previously the highest opener of the year, continued to perform well in its seventh week, earning £1.1 million to bring its total to over £50 million, landing in fourth place.
In fifth place, “Longlegs” added £724,320 in its third week, reaching a total of £5.6 million. Further down, Paramount’s “A Quiet Place: Day One” stayed at No. 6 with £168,232, totaling £9.5 million. Tamil-language film “Raayan,” directed by and starring Dhanush, debuted at No. 7 with £149,511.
In the lower ranks, Moviegoers Entertainment’s “Bad Newz” and Park Circus’ “I Saw The TV Glow” each earned around £59,000. Sony’s “Fly Me To The Moon” rounded out the Top 10 with £41,401 in its third week, bringing its total to £1.6 million.
Looking ahead, the U.K. and Ireland box office will see a variety of new releases. On Wednesday, July 31, Sony’s adaptation of “Harold and the Purple Crayon,” based on the 1955 children’s book by Crockett Johnson, will hit screens.
On Friday, Aug. 2, several films are set to debut. Trafalgar Releasing presents “Blackpink World Tour (Born Pink) in Cinemas” for K-pop fans. The animation “Kensuke’s Kingdom,” featuring voice work by Cillian Murphy, Sally Hawkins, and Ken Watanabe, will be released in over 300 locations. Universal will release “Dìdi,” a film that won two awards at Sundance earlier this year.
Nostalgia will be a theme with re-releases of Sony’s “Spider-Man” and Warner Bros.’ “The Neverending Story” to celebrate its 40th anniversary. Art house fans can look forward to the 4K reissue of Bela Tarr’s “Werckmeister Harmonies” from Curzon. Elysian Film Group Distribution will bring Studio Ghibli’s “My Neighbour Totoro” back to cinemas, and TAPE Collective will present a 4K restoration of the 1994 comedy-drama “Alma’s Rainbow.”
For Bollywood enthusiasts, Bakrania Media will release the romance “Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha,” starring Ajay Devgn and Tabu, and the espionage drama “Ulajh,” featuring Janhvi Kapoor. Yash Raj Films will debut the Malayalam-language found-footage thriller “Footage,” starring Manju Warrier. DJ Tech Ltd will handle the releases of the Malayalam-language drama “Adios Amigo,” starring Suraj Venjaramoodu, Soubin Shahir, and Asif Ali, and the Tamil-language period survival thriller “Boat,” featuring Yogi Babu.
Also debuting are the Tribeca documentary “A Story of Bones,” distributed by Tull Stories, and Trinity’s Chinese thriller “A Place Called Silence.”
